News Catalyst
Bitcoin enters today's session with a news flow that is unusually one-directional for crypto. Cointelegraph reports that AI took a back seat once Bitcoin started climbing, with corporate balance-sheet bets getting bigger as rising markets reward direct exposure, and CoinDesk notes that the UK's largest retail investment platform has moved from warning about crypto to listing crypto ETNs — a structural widening of the retail bid rather than a one-day headline. Set against that, the geopolitical tape is unsettled: fresh US sanctions on a Turkish bank over Iran, and reports that Witkoff and Kushner are carrying a new proposal to Moscow and Kyiv this weekend, both of which have historically produced abrupt intraday reversals in high-beta assets. There is no high-impact scheduled economic release on today's calendar, which matters more than it sounds: without a fixed release time to cluster liquidity around, BTCUSD tends to move in discrete, headline-driven impulses spread across the session. That is precisely the environment this strategy is built for — it does not predict the impulse, it waits for a completed engulfing candle to mark the moment aggressive flow overwhelms the other side, then trades the continuation while the HMA confirms the direction is the one already being paid.
Trade Summary
This is a momentum-continuation system for BTCUSD on the 15-minute chart. It uses an engulfing Candle Pattern as the trigger and a 21-period Hull Moving Average (HMA) as the directional filter, taking only those engulfings that resolve in the direction the HMA is already sloping. The problem it solves is the oldest one in price-action trading: an engulfing candle tells you who won the last fifteen minutes, but not whether that result is worth acting on. Roughly half of them form inside chop, where the following bar simply engulfs back the other way. The HMA supplies the missing context, and because it is far less laggy than an EMA of comparable length, it turns with the market fast enough to still be useful on a 15-minute crypto chart.
The system is directionally neutral by construction and takes both sides, but each trade is explicitly trend-aligned: bullish engulfings only above a rising HMA, bearish engulfings only below a falling one. It performs best in high-volatility, headline-driven conditions — the kind of session where a single news item produces sustained one-way order flow over several hours — and it is at its weakest in tight, low-range consolidation, where engulfing bars form constantly on nothing more than spread noise. ATR handles the risk side, scaling the stop and target to prevailing volatility so a fast BTC session and a quiet one risk the same fraction of equity.
The Anatomy of the Trade
The Logic: What Inefficiency Are We Exploiting?
An engulfing candle is a compressed record of a transfer of control. Within a single 15-minute bar, price opens beyond the prior bar's close, trades through the entire prior range, and closes beyond its opposite extreme — meaning every participant who entered during the previous bar is now offside. In a 24-hour market with no session close and no central-bank smoothing, that positioning does not clear instantly. Stops sit stacked just beyond the engulfed range, and the liquidations they trigger become the fuel for the next leg. The exploitable behaviour is that the resolution of an engulfing bar tends to extend rather than reverse when the broader trend already agrees with it — a short-horizon autocorrelation that is materially stronger in crypto than in mature FX markets.
The edge lives in the pairing, not in either component. Candle patterns alone are symmetric: the same bullish engulfing that marks the start of a trend leg also marks the violent snap-back into an exhausted level, and the pattern itself cannot distinguish the two. The HMA answers the question the candle cannot — is this the direction that has been paying? — and its Hull construction matters specifically here, because a standard 21 EMA on a 15-minute BTC chart lags far enough to still be sloping the wrong way when the engulfing fires. That is the confluence the system depends on: one rule identifies the moment control changes hands, the other confirms it is changing hands in the established direction, and only the intersection is traded. ATR adds the third dimension — how much room this particular market state requires — so the stop is neither absurdly tight during a liquidation cascade nor pointlessly wide in an overnight drift.
Setup Requirements
- Primary indicator: Candle Pattern set to Engulfing, requiring the signal bar's body to fully contain the prior bar's body and to be at least 1.2× its size.
- Trend confirmation: HMA (21-period, Close) — price must close on the correct side of the average and the average must be sloping that way over the prior 3 bars.
- Risk management: ATR (14-period) sets both stop distance and take-profit target so risk scales with prevailing volatility.
- Primary symbol: BTCUSD — the deepest 24-hour book in crypto, tight spreads on major venues, and a volatility profile high enough that a 15-minute engulfing produces a tradeable range rather than a handful of ticks.
- Timeframe: 15 minutes — long enough that an engulfing bar represents genuine committed flow rather than a single sweep, short enough to capture three or four continuation legs within a headline-driven session.
- Adaptability: The construction transfers directly to ETHUSD and SOLUSD with the body-size multiple unchanged; on lower-volatility FX majors the HMA period should be lengthened to 34 or the filter will flip too often to be a filter at all.
Entry Rules
All conditions must align on the same completed 15-minute bar. A pattern that forms intrabar and then fails before the close is not a signal — every rule here is evaluated on closed candles only.
- Long entry: A bullish engulfing completes, with its body at least 1.2× the prior body and Close is above the 21-period HMA and the HMA is rising over the prior 3 bars.
- Short entry: A bearish engulfing completes, with its body at least 1.2× the prior body and Close is below the 21-period HMA and the HMA is falling over the prior 3 bars.
Enter at the close of the confirmation candle. Do not anticipate the engulfing while the bar is still forming, and skip any signal bar whose total range exceeds 3× ATR(14) — a bar that large is a headline sweep, and the continuation this system relies on has usually already been consumed inside it.
Exit Rules
- Stop loss: 1.5 × ATR(14) from entry, placed at the time of entry and never widened. As a secondary check it should also sit beyond the engulfing bar's opposite extreme.
- Take profit: 3.0 × ATR(14) from entry — a fixed 2:1 reward-to-risk ratio.
- Signal exit: An opposing engulfing pattern completes against the open position, indicating control has transferred back.
- Time exit: Close anything still open after 16 bars (4 hours). A continuation that has not resolved within four hours is no longer a continuation.
The stop loss is non-negotiable. This system derives its expectancy from a modest win rate paired with a fixed 2:1 payoff, and that arithmetic only holds if every loss is capped at the same size — a single widened stop during an adverse BTC move can erase a month of correctly-managed trades.
Risk Management
- Risk per trade: 1% of account equity; 2% is the absolute ceiling and is not appropriate while geopolitical headlines are driving the tape.
- Risk-to-reward: Minimum 2:1. At a realistic 40% win rate this still produces positive expectancy; below 2:1 the system needs a win rate that pattern-based entries do not sustain.
- Position sizing: On a $25,000 account risking 1% ($250), with ATR(14) at $420 the stop is 1.5 × $420 = $630. Position size is $250 ÷ $630 = 0.397 BTC. Recalculate every trade — ATR on BTCUSD routinely doubles inside a single session.
- Maximum concurrent positions: One crypto momentum position at a time. BTC, ETH and the major alts correlate well above 0.8 intraday, so three simultaneous longs is one position at triple size.

Common Pitfalls
The rule set is short, and short rule sets invite improvisation. Almost every failure of this system traces to one of the five behaviours below rather than to a defect in the logic.
Taking Engulfings in a Dead Range
During low-volatility consolidation — typically the late Asian session on a quiet weekend — BTC grinds in a 0.3% band and produces textbook-looking engulfing bars every few candles, because when bodies are tiny it takes almost nothing to engulf the previous one. There is no order flow behind any of them, and the 3.0× ATR target sits beyond anything the session will deliver. Require that ATR(14) is at or above its own 50-period average before a signal is eligible, and treat a quiet session producing zero trades as the filter working correctly.
Trading the Headline Bar Itself
Crypto's catalysts arrive unscheduled — a sanctions announcement, an ETN listing, a large corporate treasury disclosure — and the bar that prints on the headline is almost always a violent engulfing in whichever direction the first algorithmic wave pushed. Frequently that is the direction which then fully reverses. With sanctions news and an active Russia–Ukraine diplomatic track both live today, treat any engulfing whose range exceeds 3× ATR as invalid regardless of HMA alignment, and wait for the following bar to close. The continuation that survives that bar is information; the move inside it is mostly liquidity withdrawal.
Relaxing the Body-Size Requirement
Three quiet sessions with no qualifying setup makes the 1.2× body multiple feel arbitrary, and dropping it to 1.0× — a bare technical engulfing — instantly produces trades. It also produces exactly the population of marginal, low-conviction bars the multiple was calibrated to exclude, and the win rate degrades faster than the trade count rises. Encode the multiple as a fixed rule in the strategy rather than a discretionary judgement, so it cannot drift downward during a drought. If BTC's volatility regime has genuinely shifted, recalibrate deliberately against ATR rather than one signal at a time.
Over-Optimising the HMA Period
It takes very little effort to establish that an 18-period HMA with a 1.15× body multiple and a 1.4× ATR stop would have outperformed the stated parameters over the last six months of BTCUSD. Those figures are almost certainly fitted to one sample of one instrument in one volatility regime. Test the HMA period in coarse steps — 14, 21, 34 — and choose a value sitting on a broad plateau of acceptable results rather than a narrow peak flanked by losses. A parameter set that only works at one exact configuration has memorised the data rather than found a persistent behaviour.
Revenge Trading After a Cluster of Failures
Pattern-continuation systems lose in clusters by construction: when BTC transitions from trending to chopping, several engulfings fire and stop out in sequence, and four or five consecutive losses is an expected outcome rather than evidence of a broken model. The real risk is behavioural — increasing size to recover the drawdown, or taking the next setup before the HMA has actually turned. Define a hard weekly drawdown limit — 6% of equity is a common choice — at which trading stops and the log is reviewed, and define it before the losing streak starts rather than during one.
Build Strategy using Arconomy
The BTCUSD Engulfing HMA Momentum Continuation is assembled in the Arconomy Strategy Designer from seven rule blocks. Every line of the strategy note above maps to a single rule — there is no scripting step and no custom indicator to write.
| Step | Rule(s) Required | Description | Key Configuration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data | Price Data | Feeds BTCUSD 15-minute candles into the strategy. This is the base series every downstream rule references. |
|
| Entry | Candle Pattern | Generates the primary signal by detecting a completed engulfing bar. Fires long on a bullish engulfing and short on a bearish one, provided the body clears the size threshold. |
|
| Filter | Moving Average | Restricts entries to trend-aligned patterns. Longs require Close above a rising 21 HMA; shorts require Close below a falling 21 HMA. |
|
| Filter | Logic | AND-gates the Candle Pattern and HMA conditions so a trade only opens when both agree on the same completed bar, and vetoes any bar whose range exceeds 3.0× ATR. |
|
| Risk | ATR & Place Trade | Sizes the position from current volatility so that every trade risks the same 1% of equity whether BTC is quiet or expanding. |
|
| Exit | Stop Loss & Take Profit | Brackets the trade on entry at a fixed 2:1 reward-to-risk, with an opposing engulfing and a 4-hour timer closing anything that stalls first. |
|
| Backtest | Validates the assembled rules across multiple volatility regimes before any capital is committed to live execution. |

Backtest Considerations
Test across a minimum of 12 to 18 months of BTCUSD 15-minute data, and confirm the sample actually contains the regimes the strategy claims to handle. A pattern-continuation system validated only across a sustained bull leg will look extraordinary and tell you nothing — the sample must include at least one multi-week consolidation, one sharp deleveraging event, and several unscheduled headline days, because those are the conditions under which the engulfing filter and the HMA slope requirement earn or lose their keep. On a 15-minute chart the signal count is high, so aim for 200 or more trades before drawing any conclusion.
Watch profit factor first — anything below 1.3 after costs is not worth running live — then maximum drawdown, and then the shape of the trade distribution. Continuation systems characteristically show a sub-50% win rate with a long right tail, so check that removing the three largest winners does not turn the equity curve negative; if it does, the edge is a lottery ticket rather than a process. Examine the losing-streak distribution rather than only its maximum, since practical viability depends on whether you can sit through the typical streak, not the worst one. The Arconomy backtesting engine reports these metrics per run, and comparing two parameter sets on drawdown-adjusted return is far more informative than comparing raw net profit.
Cost assumptions matter disproportionately on a 15-minute timeframe, because trade frequency multiplies every basis point of friction. Model BTCUSD spread realistically for your venue — typically 0.01% to 0.03% on major exchanges, materially wider on retail CFD platforms — and apply it to both entry and exit. Add explicit slippage: an engulfing entry executes into a book that is by definition already moving, and half a tick of assumed slippage is optimistic. If the strategy is only profitable at zero cost, it is not profitable. Finally, account for funding if the implementation uses perpetual futures, since holding a trend-aligned position through several funding intervals during a crowded move is a real and recurring drag.
Key Takeaways
- The edge is short-horizon continuation after a transfer of control — an engulfing bar leaves the prior bar's participants offside, and their exit fuels the next leg.
- Confluence is what makes the pattern tradeable: engulfings alone fire on counter-trend snap-backs, and the 21 HMA slope filter removes precisely that population of false signals.
- ATR-scaled stops and a fixed 1% risk per trade keep every loss the same size, which is the only condition under which a sub-50% win rate with a 2:1 payoff stays profitable.
- Stand aside in low-volatility ranges, where tiny bodies engulf each other on noise, and on any headline bar exceeding 3× ATR.
- Backtest across at least 12 months and 200 trades spanning trending, ranging and deleveraging regimes, with realistic spread, slippage and funding costs applied.

CodeTrading clones a strategy circulating in a trading community and backtests it across more than twenty assets, and the element that directly informed this post is its finding that a candlestick trigger only holds up once it is gated by a fast-reacting trend filter — a result we have encoded here as an engulfing Candle Pattern rule on BTCUSD, filtered by a 21-period HMA slope and sized with ATR rather than left to discretion.
