News Catalyst
Ether opens today into the single most reliable volatility event on the monthly calendar: the US Non–Farm Payrolls print, forecast at 56k against a prior reading of −23k, released alongside the US Unemployment Rate (forecast 4.1%, unchanged from prior). A swing of that size in the headline number — from outright contraction to modest expansion — repriced rate expectations violently the last two times it occurred, and crypto now trades as a high-beta expression of exactly that: dollar liquidity and real-rate direction. The tape into the release is already unsettled, with Reuters reporting that Iran has warned the US against an Israeli attack on a Hezbollah-held ridge in south Lebanon, and with CNBC noting that options volume has erupted in retail favourites as Robinhood and Tesla surge — a risk-appetite signal that historically leads ETH rather than lags it. For a momentum system, this combination is constructive rather than threatening: payrolls creates a genuine directional impulse instead of noise, and the retail bid supplies the follow-through that Velocity is built to measure. The caveat is timing, not direction — the print itself produces a one-to-two bar spike that will register as maximum momentum in both directions before either resolves, so the setup only becomes tradeable once the post-release 30-minute bar has closed and the impulse has a sign.
Trade Summary
This is a momentum-continuation system for ETHUSD on the 30-minute chart. It uses Velocity to measure the rate of change of price rather than its level, entering when that rate accelerates through a threshold in the direction of the prevailing EMA trend. The distinction matters: a market that is merely higher is not the same as a market that is still being bought, and Velocity separates the two by asking how fast the move is being made, not how far it has already travelled. That is the specific problem this strategy solves — it declines the late, decelerating leg of a move that a price-level breakout system would happily buy.
The strategy is directionally neutral in construction and takes both sides, but each individual trade is explicitly trend-aligned: longs only above the 50-period EMA, shorts only below it. It is built for high-volatility, directional conditions — the crypto sessions where a macro catalyst or a liquidation cascade produces sustained one-way order flow over several hours — and it is at its worst in low-volatility consolidation, where Velocity oscillates around zero and every threshold cross reverses within two bars. ATR handles the risk side, scaling stop distance to current volatility so that a payrolls-day trade and a quiet-Sunday trade risk the same fraction of equity despite very different ranges.
The Anatomy of the Trade
The Logic: What Inefficiency Are We Exploiting?
Crypto order flow is reflexive and slow to fully digest a repricing. When a macro release or a large liquidation forces a directional move in ETH, the initial impulse is rarely the whole move: passive participants rebalance over the following hours, perpetual funding adjusts, and systematic strategies chase in a queue rather than all at once. That produces a measurable window in which the speed of the move persists after the first leg has completed — a short-horizon autocorrelation in returns that is far stronger in crypto than in mature FX markets, because there is no central bank smoothing flows and no session close to reset positioning. Velocity is a direct measurement of that speed, so a threshold cross identifies the moment persistence is strongest rather than the moment price happens to be highest.
The edge comes from the pairing, not from either component alone. Velocity on its own is a symmetric measure — it registers the same acceleration in a genuine trend leg as it does in a violent mean-reverting spike into an exhausted level. The EMA trend filter supplies the missing context, restricting entries to accelerations that agree with structure and discarding the counter-trend spikes that account for most of Velocity's false signals. That is the confluence the system depends on: one rule answers “is the market moving quickly?”, the other answers “is it moving quickly in the direction that has been paying?”, and only the intersection is traded. ATR then adds the third dimension — how much room this particular market state requires — so the stop is neither arbitrarily tight during a payrolls expansion nor absurdly wide in a quiet overnight drift.
Setup Requirements
- Primary indicator: Velocity with a 14-period lookback on Close, using a threshold of ±0.35% per bar to define an acceleration event.
- Trend confirmation: EMA (50-period, Close) — price must be on the correct side of the average for the entry to be valid.
- Risk management: ATR (14-period) sets both the stop distance and the take-profit target so risk scales with prevailing volatility.
- Primary symbol: ETHUSD — deep 24-hour liquidity, tight spreads on major venues, and a volatility profile high enough that a 30-minute momentum impulse produces a tradeable range rather than a few ticks.
- Timeframe: 30 minutes — long enough to filter the single-bar spikes that dominate 5- and 15-minute Velocity readings, short enough to capture two or three momentum legs within a single macro session.
- Adaptability: The same construction transfers to BTCUSD and SOLUSD with the Velocity threshold rescaled to each instrument's typical bar range; on lower-volatility majors such as EURUSD the threshold must be cut substantially or the system will never trigger.
Entry Rules
All conditions must align on the same completed 30-minute bar. A signal that forms intrabar and then fades before the close is not a signal — the rules are evaluated on closed candles only.
- Long entry: Velocity(14) crosses above +0.35% per bar from below and Close is above the 50-period EMA and the EMA itself is rising over the prior 3 bars.
- Short entry: Velocity(14) crosses below −0.35% per bar from above and Close is below the 50-period EMA and the EMA itself is falling over the prior 3 bars.
Enter at the close of the confirmation candle. Do not anticipate the cross, and do not enter on a bar whose range exceeds 3× ATR(14) — that is a news spike, not an acceleration, and the follow-through this system relies on has usually already been consumed.
Exit Rules
- Stop loss: 1.5 × ATR(14) from entry, placed at the time of entry and never widened.
- Take profit: 3.0 × ATR(14) from entry — a fixed 2:1 reward-to-risk ratio.
- Signal exit: Velocity crosses back through zero against the position, indicating the acceleration that justified the trade has fully decayed.
- Time exit: Close any position still open after 8 bars (4 hours). Momentum that has not resolved within four hours is no longer momentum.
The stop loss is non-negotiable. Momentum systems in crypto derive their entire expectancy from a small number of large winners, and that distribution only survives if every loser is capped at the same size — a single widened stop during an adverse move can erase a month of correctly-managed trades.
Risk Management
- Risk per trade: 1% of account equity; 2% is the absolute ceiling and is not appropriate on a scheduled-news day.
- Risk-to-reward: Minimum 2:1. At a realistic 40% win rate this still produces positive expectancy; below 2:1 the system requires a win rate momentum strategies do not sustain.
- Position sizing: On a $25,000 account risking 1% ($250), with ATR(14) at $38 the stop is 1.5 × $38 = $57. Position size is $250 ÷ $57 = 4.38 ETH. Recalculate for every trade — ATR on ETHUSD routinely doubles across a single session.
- Maximum concurrent positions: One crypto momentum position at a time. ETH, BTC and the major alts are correlated well above 0.8 intraday, so three simultaneous longs is one position at triple size.

Common Pitfalls
The rule set is compact, and compact rule sets invite improvisation. Nearly every failure of this system traces to one of the five behaviours below rather than to a defect in the logic itself.
Trading Velocity in a Dead Range
During low-volatility consolidation — typically the Asian session on a quiet weekend — ETH grinds in a 0.4% band and Velocity ticks across ±0.35% repeatedly on nothing more than spread noise and thin book depth. Each cross is indistinguishable on the indicator panel from a genuine acceleration, but there is no order flow behind it, and the 3.0× ATR target sits beyond anything the session will produce. Require that ATR(14) is at or above its own 50-period average before any signal is eligible, and accept that a quiet session producing zero trades is the filter functioning correctly.
Entering on the Payrolls Spike Itself
A high-impact release such as today's Non–Farm Payrolls produces the largest Velocity reading of the week within seconds, and it produces it in whichever direction the first algorithmic wave pushes — frequently the direction that then reverses entirely. With NFP and the US Unemployment Rate both printing today, treat any Velocity cross on the release bar or the bar immediately following it as invalid, regardless of EMA alignment. Wait for a full 30-minute bar to close after the release; the acceleration that persists past that point is informational, whereas the one inside it is mostly liquidity withdrawal.
Lowering the Threshold After a Quiet Week
Four sessions with no qualifying signal makes 0.35% feel arbitrary, and dropping it to 0.25% instantly produces trades. It also produces the exact population of marginal accelerations the threshold was calibrated to exclude, and the win rate degrades faster than the trade count rises. Encode the threshold as a fixed rule in the strategy rather than a discretionary judgement, so it cannot drift downward during a drought. If the instrument's volatility regime has genuinely shifted, recalibrate deliberately against ATR — do not adjust one signal at a time.
Over-Optimising the Velocity Lookback
It takes very little effort to establish that a 12-period Velocity with a 0.31% threshold and a 1.4× ATR stop would have outperformed the stated parameters over the last six months of ETHUSD. Those figures are almost certainly fitted to one sample of one instrument in one volatility regime. Test the lookback in coarse steps — 10, 14, 20 — and select a value that sits on a broad plateau of acceptable results rather than a narrow peak flanked by losses. A parameter set that only works at one exact configuration has memorised the data rather than found a persistent behaviour.
Revenge Trading After a Momentum Failure
Momentum systems lose in clusters by construction: when ETH transitions from trending to chopping, several consecutive signals fire and stop out in sequence, and four or five losses in a row is an expected outcome rather than evidence of a broken model. The genuine risk is behavioural — increasing size to recover the drawdown, or taking the next setup before it fully qualifies. Define a hard weekly drawdown limit — 6% of equity is a common choice — at which trading stops and the log is reviewed, and define it before the losing streak starts rather than during one.
Build Strategy using Arconomy
The ETHUSD Velocity Momentum Continuation is assembled in the Arconomy Strategy Designer from seven rule blocks. Every line of the strategy note above maps to a single rule — there is no scripting step and no custom indicator to write.
| Step | Rule(s) Required | Description | Key Configuration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data | Price Data | Feeds ETHUSD 30-minute candles into the strategy. This is the base series every downstream rule references. |
|
| Entry | Velocity | Generates the primary signal by measuring the rate of change of price per bar. Fires long on a cross above +0.35% and short on a cross below −0.35%. |
|
| Filter | Moving Average | Restricts entries to trend-aligned accelerations. Longs require Close above a rising 50 EMA; shorts require Close below a falling 50 EMA. |
|
| Filter | Logic | AND-gates the Velocity and EMA conditions so a trade only opens when both agree on the same completed bar, and vetoes any bar whose range exceeds 3.0× ATR. |
|
| Risk | ATR & Place Trade | Sizes the position from current volatility so that every trade risks the same 1% of equity regardless of whether ETH is quiet or expanding. |
|
| Exit | Stop Loss & Take Profit | Brackets the trade on entry at a fixed 2:1 reward-to-risk, with a Velocity zero-cross and a 4-hour timer closing anything that stalls first. |
|
| Backtest | Validates the assembled rules across multiple volatility regimes before any capital is committed to live execution. |

Backtest Considerations
Test across a minimum of 12 to 18 months of ETHUSD 30-minute data, and confirm the sample actually contains the regimes the strategy claims to handle. A momentum system validated only across a sustained crypto uptrend will look extraordinary and tell you nothing — the sample must include at least one multi-week consolidation, one sharp deleveraging event, and several macro release days, because those are the conditions under which the Velocity threshold and the EMA filter earn or lose their keep. Aim for 150 or more trades before drawing any conclusion; fewer than that and the result is dominated by a handful of outsized winners that may never recur.
Watch profit factor first — anything below 1.3 after costs is not worth running live — then maximum drawdown, and then the shape of the trade distribution. Momentum systems characteristically show a low win rate with a long right tail, so check that removing the three largest winners does not turn the equity curve negative; if it does, the edge is a lottery ticket rather than a process. Also examine the losing-streak distribution rather than just its maximum, since the strategy's practical viability depends on whether you can sit through the typical streak, not the worst one. The Arconomy backtesting engine reports these metrics per run, and comparing two parameter sets on drawdown-adjusted return is far more informative than comparing raw net profit.
Cost assumptions matter disproportionately here because the strategy trades an ATR-scaled target rather than a fixed one. Model ETHUSD spread realistically for your venue — typically 0.02% to 0.05% on major exchanges, materially wider on retail CFD platforms — and apply it to both entry and exit. Add explicit slippage: momentum entries execute into a moving book by definition, and half a tick of assumed slippage is optimistic on an acceleration bar. If the strategy is only profitable at zero cost, it is not profitable. Finally, account for funding if the implementation uses perpetual futures, since holding a trend-aligned position through several funding intervals during a crowded move is a real and recurring drag on a system that averages four hours per trade.
Key Takeaways
- The edge is short-horizon persistence in crypto order flow — Velocity measures how fast price is moving, which predicts continuation better than how far it has already moved.
- Confluence is what makes the signal tradeable: Velocity alone fires on counter-trend spikes, and the 50 EMA filter removes precisely that population of false signals.
- ATR-scaled stops and a fixed 1% risk per trade keep every loss the same size, which is the only condition under which a low-win-rate momentum distribution stays profitable.
- Stand aside in low-volatility ranges and on the Non–Farm Payrolls release bar itself — both produce Velocity crosses with no order flow behind them.
- Backtest across at least 12 months and 150 trades spanning trending, ranging and deleveraging regimes, with realistic spread, slippage and funding costs applied.

Xeilos Trading walks through the prop-firm approach behind a six-month payout record, and the element that directly informed this post is its insistence on entering only while a move is still accelerating — a discretionary read of momentum that we have encoded here as a Velocity threshold cross on ETHUSD, with an EMA trend filter and ATR-based sizing replacing the manual judgement used in the video.
